DiscussionHave you read any Peter Lefcourt books? Click and type in a question or comment Rev. John, the latest E.T.A. on "Le Jet Lag" is April, '09, timed to coordinate with the Cannes Film Festival, at which we will promote the book and try not get run out of town by the French. When can we expect "Le Jet Lag" to be published? I am going through withdrawal waiting for Charlie Berns' next adventure. - Rev. John, Coos Bay, OR Mr. Lefcourt, pleasure to find your humble little site here. Despite its brevity, it's as full of character as your novels. Loved "The Woody," and am fixin' to purchase a copy of the Dryfus Affair and "The Deal." Looking forward to reading both. P.S. Love that sexy pic you've got posted on your home page. -- Jonelle Guillen jguillen56@yahoo.com I've read them all and The Dreyfus Affair is my favorite. Who can ever forget Dreyfus dreamily stroking the neck of his crazy dog Calvin, who ultimately ends up being his best friend? Or the freakin' hilarious conversations Dreyfus has with his shrink Dr. Fuad (really the funniest parts of the entire book). Or how Susie stays on the wrong trail for Peter's "mistress" nearly the entire way through? Seriously people -- this is the one to read! For the past year my friend Lindsay has been raving about this book The Dryfus Affair. Blah blah blah gay baseball players every time we would go to a Twins game. Finally she forced me to read the book and I absolutely fell in love with it. I just finished the last page about 10 minutes ago. You captured the essence of a gay male relationship better than most gay men themselves! Thank you for writing such a great love story. Don't tell, but I'm not sure I'm going to give the book back! I am just shocked that no one has made this into a movie yet, what is Hollywood thinking? I am very interested in knowing what great books you are working on now? Best from Minneapolis, MN. I have a perfect casting suggestion for Randy Dreyfus of THE DREYFUS AFFAIR fame: Patrick Wilson. Saw him in LITTLE CHILDREN and think he would be perfect as Randy. If only I had the millions, I'd option it myself. If this film is ever made and it is handled properly, it could be bigger than Brokeback, primarily because it has a relatively happy ending. All of us romantics who loved Brokeback are still looking about for the happy ending, I guess. Marlboro College. Is that the one in Vermont? If so, my perfidious ex-husband went there. But I don't hold it against you. Ha! Loved THE DREYFUS AFFAIR. And my affection for it hasn't lessened with repeated readings. Can't wait for what I know will be, a terrific film. I see that there is now some hope that this will actually come to pass. We're busy right now discussing and dishing THE DREYFUS AFFAIR over in the Books thread of the Dave Cullen Forum. It was our Book Club pick for the month of February. All are welcome to come over and take a look. www.davecullen.com Join in. Or not, as the inclination warrants. I just had a question regarding the Beggars & Choosers DVD release. If Buena Vista can't justify the expense of releasing the series on DVD, why not put the episodes on itunes? They'd still be able to make money off of them, but wouldn't have to pay for the production and marketing costs associated with DVDs. Just a thought. Brits - You can order Peter Lefcourt's books via amazon.com. Your amazon.co.uk ID works on the US site. I use my US account to order UK Region 2 DVDs all the time The Deal is hands down one of the funniest books I have ever read!!!!!!! Why can't I get Peter Lefcourt's books here in England? It's a bloody disgrace! Every time I visit the US I make a bee-line for the nearest bookshop to see what's new from Mr Lefcourt, so thanks to my frequency of travel, I've managed to acquire every novel he's written apart from one. Just read The Manhatten Beach Project and am about to embark upon the Eleven Karens. My favourite? Has to be The Woody! Keep 'em comming Peter!!! hello, excuse my bad english. could you let me know if there is a translation of the book "the dreyfus affair : a love story". where can one buy it? thanks a lot. Antoine ROGER tony.sud@voila.fr peter: At long last, our E Mail is up and running. At ledast, that's what Phyllis thinks. I'm not so sure. Got a lot to learn and get used to. Twelve copies of Eleven Karens being delivered to Fred today. Keep the faith. Best Ivan I enjoyed "Eleven Karens," but it wasn't good enough to click Lefcourt into my "go back and read everything he's written" category, which includes at least 40 authors. Therefore, I was astounded by "The Manhatten Beach Project." I consider it to be easily added to my 5 all-time funniest books, and the last I can clearly recall that provided so many belly laughs was "Catch 22." The plot was truly ingenious, and I only wish it had been twice as long. By this time next week I will have finished the other 5 books he has written. This is the best written comedy in decades!! "The Deal" Charlie is Gene Hackman. But I guess William H Macy will do. Just read it for the 3,462nd time. It's still Hackman. Lefcourt - you're a fucking genius! Reading your books provides me with som eof the happier times of my day. From Joe C.in Las Vegas Dear Peter I just finished "the Deal". I loved it. To tell the truth, you set the bar so high in the "Manhattan Beach Project", it will be forever difficult to top that! I'll bet I've "sold" at least five or six copies just by raving about it to friends. My ex wife & I used to play a game. After we'd both read a book, we'd pretend that we were the casting director & had complete control over casting the movie version of a given book. This is the first time that that game has popped back into my head, since breaking up with her, because I think that The Manhattan Beach Project" would make a wonderfully looney film. I'm still ruminating about the stars... the secondary characters were always the easiest to "cast"... Also, I heard you speaking on NPR in Lost Angels, when the Manhattan Beach Project was new. While I listened, you seemed very happy & pleased with the silliness that you were able to bring to bear of paper. Yet in most of the pix I see of you you look a trifle peeved. What's the deal? Well, I'm off to get whatever book was chronologically just before "the Deal"- What's coming up? What's in the works? Stay well Dennis miller ( the OTHER one!) izit1@sbcglobal.net Hi Peter; Your web site doesn't work; so I'm trying to contact you via your discussion site. I met you last year at Tower records waiting in line for tickets to the UCLA Book Fair. My name is Art and I'm a psychiatrist (sounds like a scene from psychological freaks anonymous). Two things: #1 I really like Damage Control. It was funny and immediately drew me into the story. Where did you come up with an ass-lift? That was great. #2, Can you recommend an editor for fiction. I've finished a psychological thriller, The Psychiatrist and want a pro to help polish it. Thanks for your help -- if you get this. Art Smukler E-mail-- Bjay214@yahoo.com Hi I'm Dennis Miller I've finished The Manhattan Beach Project & it's the funniest thing I've read since "Lamb". This is such an "evil" little book... I laughed so much I was tempted to just read it at one sitting, but I made it last a few days anyway. What fun! Mr Lefcourt has intimate knowledge of how programs get made & has skewered the people involved hilariously. In this town where everyone knows everyone else's business because "the community" is so small, I hope that when he's ready to pitch another TV show or movie, the people he chatarcatured will take his calls! Great work! I loved very page! Hi I'm Dennis Miller ( The OTHER one!) & I write but am unpublished -except for hundreds of magazine articles. Anyway, I heard you being interviewed in NPR last week, and the story you described was so loopy & it sounded as though you were having a blast... Anyway, I went right out & purchased it. I'm still working through Martin cruz Smith's book, so i haven't begun it in earnest, but (as is my habit) I DID read the first five or six pages-as a tease- & it reads as well as you discussed it! AND A bonus, I even got an autpgraphed copy!!! Cool! What little I know about your writing so far, reminds me of a mind as tweaked as Christopher Moore (an acquaintance). I'm a huge fan of his work, especially "LAMB". Anyway I wish you well with this one & I hope it makes it to the N.Y. Times bestseller list!! Stay well Dennis M izit1@sbcglobal.net I am reading through The Manhattan Beach Project, enjoying all the way but get sideswiped on page 224. What is the Slam Dunk Burger offered at this In-N-Out? And I thought I knew all their secrets. I wouldn't worry about it, I think Eisner's a little busy with other things these days...;) With any luck, I'll be getting a letter soon from Mr. Eisner's lawyers. Okay, almost finished Manhattan Beach Project and I love it! One question though...why did you dedicate it to Eisner? Karynn, Toronto, Canada I've been a fan for years and am thrilled to hear that Manhattan Beach Project will be published soon. Sorry to hear that Dreyfuss isn't going ahead - would make a great movie. Good luck with the pilot Peter! And don't you dare stop writing! Toronto, Canada I'm re-reading "Dreyfus" I love it. I love this website even more, because now I realize Lefcourt is behind one of my all time favorite tv shows "Beggars and Choosers." That show was brilliant. Of course Lefcourt had something to do with it. I couldn't tell you squat about baseball, but I love "Dreyfus." It would be a fun movie. I think I"ll write Ben Affleck, or maybe Matt Damon at this point. Damon's career appears more promising. I first read the Dreyfus Affair, which is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. Then I read The Woody and Abbreviating Ernie, because I just couldn't get enough of Lefcourt's wit and engaging characters. I wish there were more! I can't wait for Eleven Karens. I have the the Dreyfus affair. I think it is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I could not put it down! Peter Lefcourt is a fantasic author and I cannot wait to read another one of his books. I have read Di and I over and over again. When I read books and enjoy them, I don't see a purpose to finding another book to read, but a purpose in reading that book over and over, finding new humor, giggling at old humor, and learning, gramatically, how to make it in the push and shove world of publishing. You can make it Hollywood, I am voting for one of your books to be a screen-play...I will also pick up a new book of yours, Eleven Karens sounds fun, and read that over and over because I know I will enjoy your smart witted humor once again. Love, Renee, 20 Well, I wouldn't say that "The Dreyfus Affair" changed my life exactly, but it helped me in more ways than one. I also liked "The Woody." Used copies of "Abbreviating Ernie" are available at barnesandnoble.com. I've read every one except "Abbreviating Ernie." Does anyone know where I can get a copy? If you had to read only one, which one would you recommend? Yes. I have had the enormous pleasure of reading ALL of Peter Lefcourt's books. Which is your favorite book? Click and type in a question or comment i liked your books so much i even read "the first time i got paid for it" because i saw your name on it. and i can never read it in public cuz' i start laughing and people dont want to sit next to because they think im crazy and that a problem in the winter time when need the body heat. Love the book thing you're doing - I've read The Deal and The Woody and plan on moving to the gay baseball thing next - but if you ask me you should take the movie thing by the horns and direct the crap out of something - I'd go to the multiplex for that! Hello! Mr. Lefcourt,it's an honor to contact you! I just thought you would want to know that I'm a menber of Dave Cullens's The Ultimate Brokeback Guide, a forum for discussing all things related to BBM, and our book club discussion starting today is "The Dreyfus Affair". I look forward to a great discussion. I've read the book twice when it was first published, and I can't praise it enough. As a gay man, I've never had a straight novelist "get it" so right, about gay people being treated as human beings and not monsters. Thank you for writing it! (I have tried sending a link to the Forum and to the book club, but either I'm not skilled enough or your site doesn't allow it. But if you're interested, just Google The Ultimate Brokeback Mountain Guide and navigate to Arts & Entertainment and from there the Books thread and the discussion of "Dreyfus". Again, thank you! My favorite book is whatever the last one I read was. I thought nothing could beat Dreyfus, until I read Woody. Thought nothing could top that until I read Manhattan. How does this guy come up with this stuff. Brilliant, sheer briliiance. I am currently re-reading The Dreyfus Affair, in honour of the upcoming World Series, which I am inexplicably hooked on (maybe because there's no hockey?) I love the way the book's humour brings the ridiculously inverted morals of the US into sharp focus, and the author's insight into Major Leauge baseball make for a fascinating read. And, of course, it's incredibly romantic! The Dreyfuss Affair. Here I am in the middle of hell - I mean Iraq, with Stryker Brigade and this book offered a baseball fanatic like me (and closeted mocho man) a great escape as I try to avoid being killed - on a daily basis. I can't wait to see the movie - if it ever comes out. The Dreyfus Affair. I love the other books to, but The Dreyfus Affair is just so wonderful. It's so funny and nerve racking and exciting. Reading it is like coming home. Every year or so I find myself longing for a return to that wonderful world of Randy and D.J. and I read the book again. The Dreyfus Affair is on my top ten list of books that I love. I reread it every couple years when I start to miss Randy and D.J. I have only read the Dreyfus affair. I consider it to be one of my favorite books of all time! I have only read "Di and I", but I have to say out of all books, forced or willingly read, it IS my favorite. "The Dreyfus Affair," most definitely! I like them all, but I think "The Woody" is the funniest. Who is your favorite character? Click and type in a question or comment For different reasons at different times: Randy,D.J., Milt Zola, Mendus Faud, Molly and Dolly, Susie and Calvin the dog. I love Randy Dreyfua and D.J. Pickett. They way they care for each other is fantastic! The book and it's character haunted me for days! I love Ernie. He is a cross-dressing urologist who wears the same size clothes as his wife, Audrey. I also loves his ex-wife. She was so sweetly, pathetically real. And the dog. Can't forget about the dog! Do you think he should be put in jail? Click and type in a question or comment Many fine writers did indeed produce masterpieces from jail. The Bible to name a few. Not so funny in places but.... Yes, discipline. That's the key. Stop him from returning emails to all the women fans . As well as stopping all that playing of golf and chick watching--'clearing my head' my ass--at the beach. Absolutely! With the current administration in control prison is where all the witty people will be. Peter Lefcourt? Why heavens no! He writes fantastic books. I believe there are many more people in this world that need to be put in jail over him. What for? Writing novels that attract the human mind, or a southern region body part? His books make me laugh, turn me on, keep my interested, and make me think. Isn't that everything that educators are supposed to provide to students? (Maybe not the turning on!) Anyway, jail is not an option when it comes to human interest. Producers of South Park, The Simpsons and other shows, closely rated, are similar in his field and should not be, or have they been, put in jail. Well, as all great men and women (Mandela, Gandhi, Heidi Fleiss, to name a few) have been incarcerated, I think it's just par for the course. Yes. Locked up and the key thrown away. If Peter Lefcourt is in jail, I'd like to be in the cell next to him! Does he really not like dogs, or is he just joking? Click and type in a question or comment Ask Peter to tell the story about what Ralph did when Peter pretended to faint in the woods. One of the Karens I too can't help but wonder what the 'real' relationship between those two might be like. I simply put in the catagory of: Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmm. PETER WAS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY ABOUT HIS DOG, RALPH, WHEN HE WAS DEAN OF STUDENTS AT MARLBORO COLLEGE. PETER EXPRESSED SINCERE AND PURE AFFECTION FOR THE DOG. SINCERE AFFECTION WAS SHOWN, ALSO, FOR HARVEY, ANOTHER MARLBORO COLLEGE MUTT. I really don't know. Randy grows to like his dog and maybe that has happend with Peter Lefcourt too! I don't know. Rumor has it, though, dog hair on the leather upholstery of his BMW really ticks him off. He likes dogs. He has dogs in his books because through the dog, the characters inner conflicts are exposed. Lefcourt's humor is like a dog...biting and loving at the same time. |
